A heartbreaking mistake left a grieving Filipino family shocked after the wrong body was sent home instead of their loved one, Jenny Alvarado, an OFW who died from coal suffocation in Kuwait.
The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) confirmed that the body repatriated was from a Nepalese national, not Jenny. DFA Undersecretary Eduardo de Vega explained that the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) handled the repatriation. DMW Secretary Hans Cacdac has apologized for the error.
OWWA Administrator Arnell Ignacio visited Jenny’s family in Rizal, promising to do everything to bring her real remains home as quickly as possible. Jenny passed away on January 2, after being exposed to toxic smoke from a heating system at her workplace in Kuwait.
On January 10, when the body arrived in the Philippines, her family discovered the terrible mistake. The Samahan ng mga Domestic Helpers in the Middle East has demanded that Jenny’s body be sent home immediately and called for an investigation into her tragic death.
Filipinos online were outraged and heartbroken:
- “How could this happen? Jenny deserves to come home to her family!”
- “This shows how broken the system is. Our OFWs deserve better.”
- “Prayers for her family. This must never happen again.”
The incident highlights the need for better care and responsibility in handling the remains of OFWs, who sacrifice so much for their families and the country.
