From Brawl to Payday: John Amores Sells Jersey, Sara Duterte Letter for ₱67,500

Even in the face of controversy, former PBA player John Amores has managed to turn a negative chapter into a financial opportunity. Amores recently sold his Jose Rizal University (JRU) jersey, infamous for being worn during the November 2022 NCAA brawl, along with a personal letter from Vice President Sara Duterte, for ₱67,500.

The buyer, Filipino content creator Boss Toyo, declined the original ₱200,000 asking price but ultimately purchased the items at the reduced rate.

The blue jersey is a reminder of the infamous brawl where Amores, playing for the JRU Heavy Bombers, was at the center of the melee against the College of St. Benilde during NCAA Season 98. The fallout was severe: an indefinite suspension from the league and expulsion from the school’s athletics program.

Sara Duterte’s Encouraging Note

In the aftermath, Amores received a letter from Vice President Duterte, known for her own controversial past. Part of her message read: “Remember the lesson, not the mistake. You have a friend from the Office of the Vice President.”

Despite the letter’s supportive tone, Amores’ career took a downward spiral. Though drafted by the NorthPort Batang Pier, he faced more trouble, including a gun-related incident last September that led to his professional license revocation and attempted homicide charges.

Now awaiting trial and out on bail, Amores has channeled his past controversies into a quick payday—a move that sparks debate about redemption and opportunism.
