The Plot: A Royal Saga of Courage and Redemption
Makisig is the king of Kalayaan, a version of the Philippines that remains uncolonized, and he is a widower. As he gets ready to step down from his role as king, he is uncertain about which of his children should take over the throne; Magat Bagwis, his hot-headed son who struggles with politics, or his eldest daughter Dayang Matimyas, whom he had intended to be his successor before she ran away with the son of a political enemy.
A third child, Lualhati, has been betrothed to a Thai prince as part of a diplomatic strategy. While she is en route to her wedding, she is kidnapped by gunmen who injure Matimyas. During a stop, an outsider named Sulo spots Lualhati inside the truck of her captors. Sulo pursues them, defeats Lualhati’s kidnappers, and saves her. The pair take refuge in the home of Sulo’s former partner, Rosa, and her son Kiko. The following day, the kidnappers attempt to take Lualhati again, but Rosa and Sulo manage to fend them off. As Sulo and Lualhati escape, Rosa and Kiko are murdered by a remaining gunman who returns to Matimyas, exposing her as the one behind Lualhati’s abduction.

Wigan, the leader of the separatist group Tiwalag, asserts that he has Lualhati hostage and demands that Makisig grant autonomy to the northern region of the kingdom in exchange for her release. Meanwhile, Silay, Makisig’s spiritual advisor, alerts him to imminent violence within his household and warns of a betrayal by one of his children. Makisig suspects Magat but allows him to negotiate with Wigan in the latter’s hideout. During the discussions, Magat makes a concession to Wigan in return for him providing proof of life for Lualhati, leading to the unexpected arrival of Makisig. However, both Makisig and Magat perceive the evidence as fabricated, resulting in a clash between the forces of Kalayaan and Tiwalag, which culminates in Wigan fatally stabbing Magat. Filled with rage, Makisig kills Wigan and commands his army to slaughter Wigan’s fighters.
At a checkpoint, Lualhati spots a royal servant named Tarek, who secretly helps her and Sulo reach the royal palace. They are presented at court, where Lualhati reunites with her father and learns of Magat’s demise, but Matimyas wrongfully accuses Sulo of shooting her during her abduction. Makisig instructs Sulo to be arrested, but as he is escorted away, Sulo reveals himself to be the son of Sigwa, a Royal Guard executed by Makisig himself when he was still a prince, and demands a trial by combat, which Makisig is obligated to permit under the law. Later, Makisig visits Sulo in prison and discloses that Sigwa was his protector, whom he was compelled to execute after Sigwa wounded Makisig’s older brother while defending him. Makisig shares that Sigwa forgave him for the death and expresses his sorrow. Before departing, Makisig expresses his gratitude for Sulo’s role in saving Lualhati and asks Sulo to look after her if he should perish. That evening, Matimyas’ son, Felipe, gives Makisig a drawing of the individual who shot her. Realizing Matimyas’ plot, Makisig confronts her, while she expresses her bitterness over how he underestimates her.

The day after, Makisig and Sulo engage in trial by combat, resulting in Sulo fatally wounding Makisig. During a funeral for Makisig, Sulo is set free, while Matimyas takes the crown as Queen. Soon after, Lualhati catches Matimyas and Silay in a discussion about their plot with Wigan to abduct Lualhati and eliminate both Magat and Makisig. Lualhati confronts them, but Matimyas reveals her resentment towards Lualhati for being their father’s preferred child and expresses her ambition to seize power for herself. Following a struggle, Lualhati is overpowered by Matimyas and Silay, but just as Matimyas aims to eliminate her sister, Felipe unexpectedly arrives and protects Lualhati. Matimyas succumbs to tears as the Royal Guards take her and Silay into custody.
With Matimyas incarcerated, Lualhati ascends as the new queen. Sulo returns and requests her hand in marriage, claiming that her love has led him to move past his wish for vengeance against Makisig. The film concludes with Lualhati taking her place on the throne alongside Sulo as her partner.
In a mid-credits sequence, Tarek pays a visit to Matimyas, who sits with a sinister smile in her prison cell.
