The Bureau of Immigration (BI) apprehended two South Korean nationals, wanted for fraud, embezzlement, and violent crimes in their home country, during separate operations in Manila and Cebu on January 7 and 8, 2025.
The suspects, identified as Choi Wonchul and Lee Jihwan, are facing serious charges in South Korea and have been flagged with red notices from the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol).
According to BI Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado, the agency is determined to uphold the country’s laws and reputation. “We will expel and ban them from re-entering the country for being undesirable aliens. The Philippines is not a sanctuary for wanted criminals,” Viado emphasized.
Choi Wonchul has been charged with fraud and embezzlement under a warrant issued by a Seoul court. Reports allege that, while working as a car dealer in 2008, he pocketed approximately US$65,000 from payments made by his customers.
Meanwhile, Lee Jihwan faces charges of robbery and assault following a warrant from a Changwon District court. He and an accomplice allegedly attacked a compatriot, tying the victim with duct tape and forcing them to transfer 10 million won (about US$6,800) into Lee’s bank account.
Both suspects are now in BI custody and are set to be deported to South Korea, where they will face prosecution for their alleged crimes.
The BI has reiterated its commitment to working closely with Interpol and other international agencies to ensure that the Philippines does not become a refuge for fugitives.
