Crowds Gather at Quirino Grandstand for INC’s Peace Rally Amid Controversy

Crowds Gather at Quirino Grandstand for INC

Thousands of Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) members and supporters began arriving at the Quirino Grandstand in Manila on Monday, January 13, for a massive “peace rally” organized by the influential religious group. The event aims to foster unity and emphasize the need for peace in the country amidst political tensions.

Participants expressed their hopes for the nation’s focus to shift toward resolving urgent societal problems instead of engaging in divisive issues. One INC member shared, “This is about Vice President Sara Duterte’s impeachment. Our country faces so many challenges right now. Let’s address those first instead of adding more conflict.”

Scheduled from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., the rally highlights the group’s stance on de-escalating political tensions and prioritizing the welfare of Filipino citizens. INC spokesperson Edwil Zabala said, “Our countrymen who desire peace and want our leaders to address the nation’s needs will likely agree with the sentiment expressed by President Marcos Jr.

When asked about the attendance of prominent figures like former President Rodrigo Duterte and Vice President Sara Duterte, Zabala clarified that the event is open to everyone. However, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) urged candidates for the 2025 midterm elections to avoid using the rally for campaign purposes.

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and Philippine National Police (PNP) have deployed thousands of personnel to maintain order. Meanwhile, heavy traffic has already built up in areas surrounding the Quirino Grandstand, stretching as far as the Anda Circle.

Several local government units (LGUs) also declared work and class suspensions to accommodate the rally. Despite the logistical challenges, participants remain steadfast in their goal of sending a message of peace and unity.
